Mattie Chapman

Nine-year-old Mattie is the oldest child of the Chapman family. She is practical, goal-oriented, organized, and the leader. Back in Maryland, she was the captain of her soccer team. Mattie was also learning to ride. She wants to be either a vet or a marine biologist when she grows up. She loves dolphins and horses.

Mattie had a lot of friends back in Maryland. Her teachers were always praising her. Mattie liked her life just the way it was. She does not adjust to the move very well.

She's sure it will be the most boring place they've ever lived. Little does Mattie know she will be soon occupied by many things, like strangers at breakfast and a mysterious spyglass.

When the spyglass takes the kids on their first journey back to the Revolutionary War, Mattie is the most skeptical. She believes they are all having the same dream. Or it's a trick. Always level-headed, she has trouble letting herself believe in magic.

Mattie has brown hair and eyes, and does her best thinking over vanilla ice cream with butterscotch sauce.
